Gray’s Lake Park – Walking, Paddling and Skyline Views

Gray’s Lake Park is close enough to downtown that it does not feel like a major excursion, yet it offers a quick change from streets and buildings to water, trails and open space.

An easy outdoor break

A trail loops around the lake and makes this a straightforward place for a walk or run. The pedestrian bridge is one of the park’s recognizable features, and views back toward the Des Moines skyline remind you how close you still are to the city center.

In warmer weather, the lake also adds opportunities for paddling and other seasonal activities. I like Gray’s Lake most as a flexible stop: you can spend an hour walking or make it part of a longer outdoor afternoon.

Good after a day downtown

If you have spent several hours in museums, shops or restaurants, this is an easy place to reset before dinner. Conditions and rental services vary by season, so check current information if you specifically want to get onto the water. Otherwise, comfortable shoes are really all you need.
