Des Moines by Bike – Trails, River Paths and an Easy Way to Explore

Des Moines is a better cycling city than many visitors expect. The metro has an extensive trail network, and several routes make it possible to combine exercise with sightseeing rather than treating a bike ride as a separate activity.

Start around the river

For a visitor, the central riverfront is an easy introduction. Paths around the Principal Riverwalk connect parts of downtown and put you close to parks, bridges and attractions. From there, longer trails extend well beyond the city center.

If you are not used to the area, I would begin with a shorter route before committing to a full-day ride. Des Moines and the surrounding metro offer hundreds of miles of trails, so distance can build surprisingly quickly.

Why cycling fits Iowa

Cycling has a particularly strong place in Iowa culture, helped by events such as RAGBRAI. Even if you are not here for a major ride, exploring part of the trail system gives you a different view of the city and its relationship with the rivers and surrounding landscape. Check trail conditions and rental options locally before setting out.
