What to Eat in Des Moines – Iowa Food for First-Time Visitors

Des Moines is a good city for eating without turning every meal into a formal dining event. Iowa agriculture is never far from the story, but the local food scene ranges from old-school Midwestern favorites to creative restaurants, food trucks and international cooking.

Start with the pork tenderloin

A breaded pork tenderloin sandwich is one of the foods most closely associated with Iowa. The tenderloin is often considerably larger than the bun, which is part of the charm rather than a serving error. If you only try one deliberately Iowan dish, this is an easy choice.

Look for Steak de Burgo

Steak de Burgo is another dish strongly connected with Des Moines. Variations differ, but expect beef paired with a rich garlic-and-herb treatment. It is a useful contrast to the casual tenderloin and shows another side of the city’s food traditions.

Markets and modern Des Moines

The Downtown Farmers’ Market is excellent for grazing when it is in season, while neighborhoods such as the East Village and Ingersoll offer plenty of places to build an evening around food and drinks. My advice is not to search only for “Iowa food.” Try one or two local classics, then let Des Moines show you what its current restaurant scene looks like.
