Pappajohn Sculpture Park – Public Art in Downtown Des Moines

Pappajohn Sculpture Park is one of those attractions that fits easily into almost any Des Moines itinerary. It sits in the Western Gateway area of downtown and turns an ordinary city walk into an open-air art visit.

Art without the museum feeling

The park features large-scale works by internationally known artists, but you do not need to know anything about contemporary art to enjoy it. The scale of the sculptures and the open lawns make the park interesting even if you simply want somewhere pleasant to walk between downtown stops.

It is also easy to revisit. Morning light, evening light and changing weather give the sculptures a different character, and there is no need to commit half a day to the experience.

Easy to combine with downtown

I would include the park while exploring downtown rather than make a separate journey solely for it. Restaurants, cafés and other cultural attractions are nearby, and the park provides a useful pause between them. For first-time visitors, it is also one of the places that challenges the idea that Des Moines is purely a business and government city.
