The Iowa State Fair is not just another event on the Des Moines calendar. For a short period every August, it becomes one of the defining experiences in the city, bringing together agriculture, concerts, rides, competitions and an extraordinary amount of fair food.
What should a first-time visitor expect?
The fairgrounds are huge, so trying to see everything is unrealistic. Pick a few priorities and leave room to wander. Livestock barns and agricultural exhibits are part of the traditional fair experience, while rides, live entertainment and food stands create a completely different atmosphere elsewhere on the grounds.
The famous Butter Cow is one of the classic stops. It has been a fair tradition for generations and is exactly the sort of wonderfully specific attraction that makes the event memorable.
Plan ahead
Accommodation and traffic can be busier during the fair, so this is one Des Moines event where advance planning pays off. Check the current fair dates, ticket information and concert schedule before traveling. Even if you only spend a day there, the State Fair offers a concentrated introduction to Iowa culture that is difficult to find anywhere else.
