Iowa State Capitol – Visiting Des Moines’ Golden-Domed Landmark

The Iowa State Capitol is the kind of landmark that makes you stop even if government buildings are not normally high on your sightseeing list. Sitting above the East Village, its gold-covered central dome is visible from around the city and gives Des Moines one of its most recognizable views.

More than a photo stop

It is worth walking up the hill for the exterior alone, but I would make time to go inside as well. The building was constructed in the late nineteenth century and the interior is full of marble, decorative woodwork, art and grand public spaces. Guided tours can take visitors through the legislative chambers and other parts of the building, while the famous law library is another highlight.

Combine it with the East Village

The Capitol works particularly well as the starting point for a half-day in this part of Des Moines. Walk the grounds, visit the nearby State Historical Museum of Iowa and then continue into the Historic East Village for shops, coffee or lunch.

Check current tour times before visiting, especially if seeing the interior is important to you. Even without a tour, the Capitol grounds and views toward downtown make this one of the essential first stops in Des Moines.
