From beautiful gardens and impressive architecture to fascinating museums and lively neighbourhoods, discover some of Des Moines’ most memorable experiences.
Des Moines offers a surprising variety of attractions for visitors interested in history, culture, food and outdoor activities.
The city is relatively easy to explore, and several popular attractions are located within or close to downtown.
Here are some experiences I would recommend including in your itinerary.
Visit the Iowa State Capitol
The Iowa State Capitol is one of Des Moines’ most impressive landmarks.
Its beautiful golden dome dominates the skyline, while the interior features elaborate architecture, historic artwork and decorative details.
Visitors can explore selected areas of the building and learn about Iowa’s history and government. Guided tours are also available.
Explore the East Village
The East Village is one of Des Moines’ most interesting neighbourhoods.
Located east of the Des Moines River, the district offers independent shops, restaurants, cafés and attractive historic buildings.
It is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon browsing local businesses before enjoying dinner at one of the neighbourhood’s restaurants.
Discover the Pappajohn Sculpture Park
Located in downtown Des Moines, the Pappajohn Sculpture Park features an impressive collection of contemporary outdoor sculptures.
The park is free to explore and provides an interesting combination of art and urban scenery.
It is particularly enjoyable on a sunny afternoon.
Visit the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden
The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden offers beautiful plant collections, landscaped outdoor areas and an impressive indoor conservatory.
It is an excellent destination if you want a peaceful break from the city.
Enjoy the Downtown Farmers’ Market
During its regular outdoor season, the Downtown Farmers’ Market attracts visitors with fresh produce, prepared food, local products and a lively atmosphere.
It is a wonderful opportunity to experience Iowa’s agricultural traditions and discover regional specialities.
Explore Gray’s Lake Park
Gray’s Lake Park offers walking paths, cycling routes and beautiful views across the water.
The illuminated pedestrian bridge is particularly attractive in the evening.
My advice is to combine the State Capitol and East Village with a visit to the sculpture park. Together, they provide an enjoyable introduction to Des Moines’ history, culture and modern city life.
