Historic East Village – Shops, Food and Local Character

The Historic East Village is the part of Des Moines I would recommend to anyone who wants to explore beyond a checklist of attractions. Sitting between the Iowa State Capitol and the Des Moines River, it mixes historic buildings with independent shops, restaurants, bars and cafés.

Give yourself time to wander

This is not really a neighborhood to rush through. Browse the stores, stop for coffee and pay attention to the smaller businesses between the obvious destinations. The Capitol provides a dramatic backdrop, but the appeal of the East Village is the collection of everyday places around it.

It works particularly well in the afternoon after visiting the Capitol or State Historical Museum. Stay into the evening and the emphasis gradually shifts from shopping and sightseeing toward dinner and drinks.

A useful base for visitors

If you prefer character and walkability to a conventional hotel district, the East Village is also worth considering when deciding where to stay. Downtown is just across the river, making it possible to explore a large part of central Des Moines without constantly getting back in the car.
