A Day Trip to Winterset – Covered Bridges and Small-Town Iowa

Winterset is an easy change of pace from Des Moines and one of the most obvious day trips if you want to see a smaller Iowa town. It is best known for the covered bridges of Madison County, but the town itself gives the trip more substance than simply driving from bridge to bridge.

The covered bridges

The historic bridges are spread around Madison County, so having a car makes the day much easier. Fans of The Bridges of Madison County will recognize the connection, but you do not need to know the book or film to enjoy the rural roads and historic structures.

Spend time in Winterset itself

Do not rush straight back to Des Moines after seeing a bridge. Walk around the town square and allow time for local history and lunch. Winterset is also known as the birthplace of actor John Wayne, adding another distinctly American thread to the visit.

How long do you need?

You can make Winterset a half-day trip, but I would allow most of a day if you want to explore the countryside without watching the clock. It is close enough to Des Moines to feel easy while still providing a noticeably different Iowa experience.
